by author Katherine Janson If the changing leaves and the cool, crisp air aren’t enough to get you outside, consider this: being active outdoors connects us to nature and helps us achieve balance in our busy lives. “Being active outdoors is a great way to improve your health while escaping the pressures of everyday life,” says Kelly Murumets, President and CEO of ParticipACTION, the national voice of physical activity and sport participation in Canada. Research shows that being outdoors improves your sense of well-being, your stamina, and your mood. Plus, kids—three to 12-year-olds—who spend more time outdoors are more likely to be more physically active overall. “When we get outside and get moving, we become role models for our friends, children, and neighbours,” says Murumets. “Plus, healthy patterns learned in childhood set the foundation for a lifelong attachment to physical activity and the outdoors.” One study of adults who participate in recreational activities such as hiking, bicycling or canoeing, found that 90 percent of them began participating in an outdoor activity between the ages of five and 18. Unfortunately, there is evidence that today’s children are gravitating away from the natural world, in favour of sedentary, indoor activities. If we want to get our next generation moving, we have to set a good example; parents and caregivers are the primary influencers on a child’s decision to partake in an outdoor recreational activity. “Get moving and your family will move with you,” says Murumets. “Fall hikes, a brisk walk to and from school or a weekend exploration of the bike trails in your community are great ways to connect with nature—and each other.” Wherever you live in Canada, there are outdoor activities available close to home. According to the Canadian Fitness and Lifestyle Research Institute, 95 percent of Canadian parents report that parks and outdoor spaces are available nearby. Choosing activities that are simple, affordable, and fun will mean you’re active outdoors more often. If you’re feeling stuck in a rut, just open the front door and start walking!
