In October 2003, I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. My symptoms were shakiness, extreme hunger, brain fog, and my heart raced uncontrollably.

Blood tests showed my Free T4 level was 50.3 pmo1/L—normal is 8.0 to 23.0 pmo1/L, my T3 level was 6.5 nmo1/L—normal is 0.9 to 2.8 nmo1/L, and my TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) level was less than 0.10 mU/L—normal is 0.40 to 5.00 mU/L.

Four months later I saw the specialist who said my best option was to “kill” my thyroid with a radioactive iodine pill. I didn’t want to “kill” part of my body! I’ve always tried to live a healthy lifestyle, so the day I was diagnosed with the disease, I started researching hyperthyroidism while making natural changes.

I didn’t tell the specialist this, but I did tell her my blood work had improved since my diagnosis. I suggested having my blood tested every six weeks to watch for improvements, and she agreed. I adjusted my vegetarian diet to six small, high-protein meals daily, making breakfast my biggest meal. Because of the sugar content, I ate no more than two pieces of fruit a day.

I discovered foods that naturally suppress thyroid hormone production including cruciferous vegetables, mustard greens, rutabagas, turnips, soybeans, peaches, and pears. I had two servings of these foods daily. Other beneficial foods, I found, are alfalfa, beet tops, carrots, celery, watercress, onions, and almonds.

To suppress thyroid hormone production, I drank at least two litres of pure water daily as well as half of a juiced cabbage combined with carrot juice. I avoided caffeine (or any kind of stimulant), chocolate, alcohol, white foods (wheat, sugar, rice, salt), dairy, anything from the sea (due to the iodine content), and digestive enzymes since my digestion was on fast-forward.

Supplements also helped heal my body. Each day with breakfast and my evening meal I took 100 mg of B complex, two tablespoons of brewer’s yeast, two tablespoons of hemp oil, 1,200 mg of lecithin, 1,000 mg of vitamin C with bioflavonoids, 400 IU of vitamin E (breakfast only), and 3 mg of copper. At bedtime I took 1,200 mg of magnesium with 1,000 mg of calcium/magnesium in a 1:1 ratio. I avoided all supplements with zinc until I was cured.

For my racing heart I drank four cups of mistletoe and hawthorn tea daily. I did a continuous liver cleanse for four months. I relaxed by doing meditation, reading, aromatherapy, spending time alone, taking baths, and listening to relaxing music; and, for exercise, did yoga and walked—I refrained from doing exercise that increased my already fast heart rate. I had reiki treatments and wrote the same affirmation, “I am a healthy being on all levels,” daily, for four months.

In December 2004 my blood work showed my Free T4 level at 12.5, my T3 level at 1.9, and my TSH level at 0.47. I was cured and feeling great! I feel that my efforts and the belief that my body could heal itself if I treated it well are what cured me. What a tremendous feeling!!

Do you have any sources of information that you were able to gather the program that you put together? I also was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and they keep telling me the only solution is the radioactive iodine. If you could please let me know if you have any doctors, nutritionist, books, etc., it would be very beneficial.

Any advice that you have would be great!

Three weeks ago I was FINALLY told that I have hyperthyroidism and that it was what had been making me so sick on and off for the last couple of years. I don't really remember when the syptoms really started as they sort of came on one at a time and just kept on adding on top of each other. It finally got to the point that all of my organs were inflammed and not working properly. My blood sugar would drop suddenly without any warning and from my heart racing so fast I would get very dizzy and pass out. I was taken to hopsital so many times by ambulance and they ran all sorts of tests which all came back negative BUT NOT ONE Doctor ran the thyroid test until 3 weeks ago when I was to the point I just couldn't take it anymore as I was constantly being woken up from a sound sleep doubled over with nausea and vomiting. I could hold down no food and I was having blinding headaches. I was so irritable and depressed and would swing from one mood to one emotion almost minute by minute. I had 2 miscarriages last year also.

I decided I did not want to take anymore medications and told my Dr that I was going to try a radical diet change. I immediately gave up sugar, wheat, dairy, caffine and eggs. By the way that was pretty much what I lived off of for years.

Within 6 hours the chronic nausea and vomiting stopped and by the end of the day I no longer had a headache. I had terrible insomnia for days on end at first and it took five days before I no longer had the terrible pain in my heart and the racing heart. I am since then completely off my heart medicine! I was diagnosed with a potentially fatal heart problem 12 years ago so when my heart medicine stopped working properly over the last 6 months I really knew I was in trouble but all the doctors told me "just take more!". I was taking 3 times the dose and it still wouldn't calm my heart. My doctor humoured me and let me try it all naturally as long as I agreed to have a blood test every week for 6 months and the second he saw me getting sicker we would do what he wanted. I went in for my first blood test 6 days after I started the radical diet change we were both totally shocked to see my blood had returned back into the normal range in such a short time ALL NATURALLY!!! I knew something was up before the results because I am feeling amazing. People who have seen me suffering for years and my children and husband cannot believe the difference. As long as I can stay on this diet I will try to do so if I can keep feeling this fantastic. I just wish to God someone had figured out what I had before I had to suffer this long. QC7Crew@aol.com

Good for you! You did it the natural way! Doctors want to kill the thyroid so you can be on their pills the rest of your life! How sad. But there are still people with common sense out there. I am going the natural way, the way God made us!

Kerry,

I was just diagnosed with hyperthyrodism as well. I am getting readdy to go through the gamit of test and the "medical" route. I am wondering if when you mean 'cured' you don't need to ardently follow the diet any more or you still need to follow it to be cured?

Thanks for the extremely helpful and uplifting information!

I have been suffering from hyperthyroidism and been taking Methimazole on and off. My recent blood test shows higher T3 ( 6.8 PG/ML), T4 (2.09 NG/DL), Thyroid peroxodase (>1000 IU/ML) and Thyroglobulin (1646.0 IU/ML) levels with low TSH level (< 0.1 UIU/ML).

As many discussed in the forum that the treatment to cure hyperthyroidism is by radioactive iodine am scared how would it effect my body after the treatment. As I was told there would be chances to become hypothyroid in the future and need to take medicine lifelong to replace the thyroid gland. I am worried of being fat. As I am planning to get married at the end of this year I dont want to become fat, but rather I want to become healthy and fit. Right now I look so lean (specially my hands and legs are so thin), and have lost glow on my face. I look aged on my face.

Could you please advise me to regain glowness on my face and to stay healthy and fit? Can you please suggest me the diet to be taken or any benificial information to cure hyperthyroidism without any treatments. Also can I please know if taking medication (methimazole) everyday a good thing?

Thankyou

Hi Kerry,

I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism last month and your story has given me much hope for a safe alternative to radioiodine therapy!

Do you have any advice about pregnancy and breastfeeding while following your regimen? Are there any precautions to be aware of?

Thanks,
Lia

I also have been told I have hyperthyroidism, I feel awful and feel like the wait for the ultrasound and radioactive scan is too far away (1 month and , 5 weeks.) Apparently it is okay to wait this long. When you feel the symptoms of the disease, how can it be healthy to have a racing heart? How long is it okay to have your heart racing? The surefast cure of having your thyroid chopped off seems barbaric. Pills for life...sounds thrilling also. Well, I guess this is worth a shot. I'd like to know how you progressed through your illness. Did you ever give in to any of the regular treatments.
thanks for your help
