| I've just been diagnosed with IBS and I am trying to educate myself on what to do. The doctors just don't seem to know what to do either. They say you've got IBS, goodbye. Any help out there? |

Hi,
I too have suffered with this annoying problem. I find that buscopan (ie. an antispasmodic--which you can obtain over the counter at any pharmacy) helps tremendously with the cramping and spasms (it works INSTANTLY, as soon as you swollow it) but of course, should only be taken when necessary and not every day or you will require more to obtain the same effect, as with any drug, be it over the counter or not.
I'm sure you already know this but caffienated beverages, sodas, junkfood and well...basically anything that tastes even remotely good, tends to exacerbate the pain and discomfort, so eat as close to nature as possible (such as unsweetened cooked oatmeal, low fat yogurt, etc).
Having said that, I find vegetables especially hard to digest and they tend to exacerbate the IBS symptoms, so I tend to avoid them or only eat them in small amounts.
You could try juicing or pureeing them in a food processer though or failing that, drink a small can of V8 Juice to get your veggie equivilent for the day or just take a good multi vitamin.
If you find the same with fruit, try unsweetened applesauce and frozen bananas (cut them in half and eat half at a time).
If you have a problem with diarrhea, drink a glass of milk or chunk of cheese and it will or should stop the flow (as it were). It has to do with the lactic acid in the dairy.
On the other hand, if you have a problem with constipation, then of course drink lots of water. Mint tea helps soothe some of the spastic cramping (which can produce BRUTAL pain--especially if you're constipated) and any hot soup is good too.
A 1/2 cup of unsweetened spoon sized shredded wheat cereal each morning (with 1 cup of skim milk and 1 T. of flavoured protein powder), is an excellent remedy for constipation. I haven't had to touch laxatives in years, since having my sssw each day (and the same at supper).
Avoid binge eating, as this will exacerbate the spastic cramping. |

I'm a Clinical Hypnotherapist and have worked with numerous clients that have suffered from IBS. One common theme seems to be a heightened level of stress and anxiety.
I have found that by working on reducing the amount of stress, and the improving the manner in which the stress is managed the impact of IBS can be limited or removed entirely.
You may want to look into hypnotherapy as a solution. |
